Hurting for my son

Posted Jul 6, 2010 11:02am
Throughout the day yesterday Kaden seemed to be improving a little bit. As the night went on we did some back peddling. He is not tolerating the Pedialyte very well and we were getting tons of air out of his belly. Night shift comes on and despite my concerns they're insisting that we continue to bump up his feed. I asked them why they wouldn't just take it slow anymore. The nurse said that she totally agreed with me that we needed to slow down, but that she's at the day teams mercy. Kaden spiked a fever for about an hour and became quite flushed. The doctor came in to talk to me and at that point Kaden's belly was round and he was cold and sweaty, complaining of pain. She informed me that the were forging forward anyways to 48 Mls/hour. At this point I had a moment of weakness and said to her that his maximum volume tolerance is only 32 mls/hour and that I didn't understand why they were exceeding that. I asked her if we could vent his belly to help the air escape and she said that his feed needed to remain constant. I told her that if she's not willing to compromise and even vent his belly, then I was not willing to allow them to continue increasing his feed. I expressed to her that I know my son's rights and I'm putting my foot down. She empathized with me and said "I know where you're coming from, and I agree with you. However, Dr.Fox specifically told me not to make any changes to Kaden's orders. He has your son's best interest in mind."
Best Interest?????
I think not. His best interest would be to make sure he's tolerating what he's getting before increasing it even more. His best interest would be to insure that he's not anemic again. His best interest would be to listen to me. I KNOW MY SON!!!!! I don't care who or what comes our way, I will overide the doctors if Kaden's in pain and I WILL NOT BACK DOWN. I think I need an attorney or we need to transfer to a different hospital. This "Dr.Fox" thinks he knows everything. He has failed Kaden on 4 seperate occasions and without my assertive intervention who knows what could've happened to our little boy. I'm documenting every screw-up and made sure this morning that everyone is aware of that.
So, as of this morning, Shana (his day doctor who is also at the mercy of Dr.Fox) said that she would voice my concerns to the team but that she feels like we need to keep forging on with Kaden's feeds. I said that I disagree and very cautiously explained that I will do whatevers legally and consider well-intended to advocate for Kaden. So anyway, the docs are standing outside our door. We shall see what happens.
