still waiting

Posted Jul 5, 2010 9:49am
Yesterday was pretty ordinary (in Kaden's world). He was given an enema and that helped produce three large bowel movements...which is good. He needs to be able to have bm's on his own though. The team decided to initiate pedialyte at 10 mls per hour to see if he could tolerate it. The purpose of this challenge was to see if his stomach would empty. He failed the challenge. They decided to give his stomach a 2 hour break and start again. He seems to be comfortable this morning, but we haven't yet checked his residual. So, for those of you that don't speak "medical"...they gave him 1/3 of an ounce per hour. When we connect his g-tube extension cord to his button, sometimes a little bit of what's in his stomach comes back out. This is called residual. Well, Kaden's giving back in his residual everything that we're putting in. He has a lot of gunk and blood in his residual. He is still in pain and losing weight very quickly. They put him on stronger tummy medicine yesterday in hopes that his stomach will calm down. It appears as though he is reflusing passed his Nissen now. It's probably leaky from all of the wretching and vomiting. The only solution as of now is to try and stop any acid reflux all together. The team is attempting this with medicine. For those of you that don't know, Kaden has a hole in his throat that allows acid into his lungs. This hole is the laryngeal tracheal cleft I've been referring to in previous updates. His autonomic system seems to be calming down a little bit. The poor little guy was had an erection due to autonomic dysfunction for 13 hours. We are checking his blood today to see how his liver is doing, making sure he doesn't have any infection, and making sure he's not anemic. Lot's of stuff going on. I will probably be posting a lot of updates today, as we watch the day progress. I will only mark them as URGENT if Kaden takes a turn for the worst. Otherwise, after this update you can probably check the rest of them all at the same time later. The frequent updates will be brief and are mainly to inform people that are following him very closely. Let the day begin....
